Ice Fishing Extravaganza — Dec. 13 the Central Peninsula Connections staff is hosting the third annual Connections Ice Fishing Extravaganza! Please come ice fish with your favorite Connections advisors, enjoy fishing fellowship with other homeschool families and perhaps put some fresh fish on the dinner table. Connections staff will be meeting with interested parties at the Nikiski Rec. Center parking lot at 10 a.m. on Dec. 13. We will have an ice auger, warm up tent, fresh bait and fishing rods for loan. Participants are invited to bring their own ice fishing rods, secret fish catching bait and a healthy dose of good fishing luck! Our plan is to travel from the Nikiski Rec Center to Island Lake in Nikiski and fish near the boat ramp. We had very good success last year at this location and hopefully this year we will have similar success. There will be prizes for largest fish, most fish landed and the smallest fish landed. Please RSVP so we have an idea of how many folks are participating. This event is open to all homeschool families regardless of their home school program affiliation. Please feel free to invite folks from other programs, the more the merrier. If the temperature is below zero degrees, we will reschedule this event. T200 Drawing Contest — The 30th T200 Sled Dog Race will start on Feb. 1, 2014 at mile 112 on the Sterling Highway. Each year, we invite every student, Grades 1-6, to create a drawing for our T200 Drawing Contest. Please encourage your students to participate in the contest and to watch the race. The winning entry will be the cover of our 30th T200 race program.

Over the past weekend, Jesse Bjorkman, a middle school teacher here at Nikiski Middle High School, with the help of some other volunteers including members of the fish and game, took a group of AOC middle school students on an educational moose hunt. They hunted, stalked and eventually arrowed a huge cow moose. The fun and learning did not stop there as the students also had to process the moose themselves. This opportunity was an amazing educational experience that celebrates the uniqueness that Alaska has to offer. This is yet another example of the commitment and creativity the Nikiski Middle High School staff shares with their students. Great job Jesse.

YEARBOOK: Just a quick update on where we are. Students have completed with their first spread. That puts us at about half of the way finished. We are still looking for some cross country state & regions pictures and some state swim pictures. With winter sports beginning their competition part of the season, please look for those photo opportunities and snap a quick picture for us and upload them to the replayit.com website. I will be trying to get cameras at most events, but even with the hundreds of football photos we had I was searching for just the right photo at the end so ‘the more the merrier’. I would also like some crowd shots as it shows our community support for the athletics programs.

n

We are short on our sales goals; if you are interested in purchasing a yearbook or advertising space please do so before winter break to get the best pricing. Josten’s is now offering website business advertising on replayit.com for businesses that purchase a half page or full page advertisement. If you would like to donate a yearbook to a senior please email me and I will help make that happen. Yearbooks this year are $57 and come with free personalization if pre-ordered. Our sales goal for the senior class is 90% and 200 books by Dec. 20. If we have over a 75% purchase rate for our senior class before Dec. 13 we are offering an incentive/reward drawing: any senior that has purchased a yearbook by Dec. 13 will be put in a drawing for a free half page senior send-off (recognition). If you have already purchased your yearbook, thank you. If you have not, please go to the josten’s website or stop by the school to place your order. We will draw a winner during semester one finals week. If you are interested in donating a yearbook to a senior, please email me and I will help you give this gift.

n

If you ever have any questions or just too many photos to upload to the website, please feel free to email Mrs. McGlothen ( kmcglothen@kpbsd.k12.ak.us ) and I will get back to you. Thanks for your support and have a great holiday season.

The new accountability system ranks schools on a 100-point scale, and elementary schools are rated on the following: (1) individual student academic achievement, (2) overall school progress or improvement of academic scores from year to year, and (3) the percentage of students in attendance at school each day during the full school year.

n

In order to receive the maximum number of daily attendance points, we must achieve 96% daily attendance at school. Last year our daily attendance rate was 92.28%. Your help is critical in this effort! It has always been important that your child attend school every day that s/he is well so s/he can have a successful and meaningful school experience. Now, regular attendance will also help our school achieve 5-star status. Thank you so much.

nnArt for allnLuxury brand Louis Vuitton celebrates its 20th year in the Philippines with a meaningful eventn

nby Liza Ilarde December 13, 2013nPhotos by Sherbert Serrano

n

Louis Vuitton Louis Vuitton has always had a strong connection with art. One need only look at the luxury brand’s collaboration collections with contemporary artists like Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Prince, among others. These celebrated collaborations were spearheaded by now-former creative director Marc Jacobs, himself an art lover and collector. (Jacobs announced his resignation last October. Nicolas Ghesquière has since been named as his successor.)

n

louis vuitton handbags outlet This year, to celebrate Louis Vuitton’s 20th anniversary in the Philippines, the brand famous for its high-profile parties decided to go a little low-key but no less news-worthy. Instead of booking a cavernous venue, inviting Manila’s 500, and serving copious amounts of champagne all night long, Louis Vuitton Philippines commissioned five contemporary Filipino artists to produce work that exemplifies femininity and its beauty and strength. The results are on exhibit in a show that opened last December 9, coinciding with Louis Vuitton’s 20th anniversary.

n

discount louis vuitton The artworks chosen were a painting each from Popo San Pascual and Chati Coronel, and a sculpture each from Ramon Orlina, Ferdinand Cacnio, and Olivia d’Aboville. The exhibit titled A Tribute To Heroines is currently on display at the Louis Vuitton store in Greenbelt 4 and will be there till December 15. The public is free to view them. Present at the event were Jean-Baptiste Debains, president of Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific; Emily Zhou, general manager of Louis Vuitton Micronesia and the Philippines; Vita Wong, vice-president for cultural development; and Rhea de Vera-Aguirre, country manager of Louis Vuitton Philippines.

n

louis vuitton bags outlet online At the opening, de Vera-Aguirre acknowledged the artists who were all present, except for Popo San Pascual. In her welcome remarks, she announced that half of the proceeds from the sale of the artworks will be donated to rehabilitation efforts for areas affected by last month’s super typhoon.

n

lv outlet store online “Due to the recent turn of events brought about by Typhoon Haiyan, we would like to make this occasion more meaningful by donating proceeds of the sale of the artworks to SOS Children’s Villages in Tacloban City. The donation will support the rebuilding of the village for the displaced children,” shared de Vera-Aguirre.

n

louis vuitton handbags store Exhibiting art in a Louis Vuitton store is not a new concept as their branches in Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, Macau, and even Las Vegas have all had artists display their works within the luxury brand’s retail space. But this is the first time it’s been done in the Philippines, said Zhou. She added, “Collaborating with artists is nothing new for Louis Vuitton. It’s a worldwide initiative, so this event signifies our commitment globally in sharing our passion for art and creativity with a bigger audience here.”

A Tribute To Heroines

n

Get to know the artists and their works

n

n

• Renowned painter and Thirteen Artists Awardee, Popo San Pascual, revisits his blue period and celebrates the beauty and grand design of life through “Botanica”. The monochromatic departure serves as an interlude from vibrant interplay of colors, for which he is known. Although he applies the same playful brushstrokes to achieve the dreamlike appeal, the effect is evocative and is as delicate as fine porcelain. Inspired by endemic Philippine orchids that he painstakingly cares for in his garden, San Pascual takes a personal approach towards the exotic characteristics of these rare floral varieties that rise from cooled volcanic lava. He likens a refined yet strong woman to an orchid: Its stem is strong yet flexible; it waits for the perfect time to bloom and when it does, it exhibits its endurance as no other flower.

n

n

• Ramon Orlina’s exquisite glass sculptures offer multi-dimensional perspectives unlike any other. “A Mother’s Strength” is Orlina’s testament to motherhood. His work echoes a deep reverence for motherhood and depicts the mother in the pinnacle of the home, binding the family together. Orlina’s reputation extends to art circles and patrons in the Philippines and all over the world. He has been conferred two prestigious ASEAN Awards in the field of visual arts. In 2006, he was bestowed The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award for having led a life of excellence in the field of arts and having contributed immensely to public welfare and national development.

n

n

• Chati Coronel found her most honest fulfillment in painting after obtaining her degree in architecture as her artistic backbone. She paints layer over layer of strokes and images until each painting has a history to tell. Her work “Neck” purposely attempts to veer away from the obvious leanings of portraiture to reveal seemingly ordinary yet universal aspects of being. In her artist statement, Coronel cites a compassion meditation from the Dalai Lama as the inspiration for UnPortraits: “In order to generate compassion for someone, one can meditate on something ordinary that you have in common with that person.”

n

n

• “Echinoderm 3” is one of the latest works by young French-Filipino artist Olivia d’Aboville. Graduating with honors from Duperré, a prestigious Textile Design school in Paris, d’Aboville experiments with textiles and everyday materials to create artworks inspired by nature. From plastic spoons to pins and water bottles, d’Aboville is fascinated by ordinary mass-produced objects. These objects refer to our society and our lifestyle that are inevitably destroying our environment and polluting our seas. She manipulates and recycles materials to create new work. For every interesting element that inspires her, she asks herself, “What can I do with this? Can I cut it, bend it, heat it, stretch it, accumulate it, and create a new form?”

n

n

• “Power and Grace” is Ferdinand Cacnio’s homage to the feminine form. After 20 years in graphic design, Cacnio forged his way into the realm of fine arts at the age of 45. In 2005, he was awarded the top prize by the Art Association of the Philippines. He went on to garner awards in 2008 and 2010 with the Gintong Parangal (Golden Award) for Culture and Arts by the City of Malabon and the prestigious Parangal Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan (Arts and Culture Guide Award) by the City of Manila, respectively. Known for his ability to “tame” the stiffness of metal, Cacnio once more created a stunning sculpture that captures rhythm and energy, exquisite grace, and the professional skill of a female dancer.

    n

tiffany Best Buy Co. watched its stock plunge more than 27% in morning trading Thursday after announcing poor holiday results that suffered from heavy competition and deep discounting.

    n

tiffany and co The consumer electronics retailer said revenue for the nine weeks ended Jan. 4 slumped 2.6% to $11.45 billion from the same period a year earlier.

    n

tiffany outlet online Same store sales slipped 0.9% in the U.S., though they managed at 0.1% boost internationally.

    n

tiffany rings In late morning trading in New York, Best Buy stock tanked nearly 28%, or $10.45, to $27.11 a share.

    n

tiffany silver Hubert Joly, chief executive of the Minneapolis chain, blamed an epidemic of deals, discounts and bargains across the industry.

    n

tiffany jewelry outlet “The promotional intensity that began with Black Friday continued throughout the period, which led us and our competitors to answer one question -- do we make the incremental investment necessary to be price competitive and defend our market share?” Joly said in a statement. “For us, there was only one answer.”

    n

But the rampant price slashing “did not result in higher industry demand and had a deflationary impact on our revenue,” Joly said.

    n

The company also struggled amid a “disappointing mobile phone market” and troughs in foot traffic.

    n

Joly added Best Buy had trouble keeping popular products in stock. Supplies of game consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, which launched during the holidays, were in short supply for many retailers.

    n

And although categories such as computing, appliances and gaming did well, their gains were “more than offset” by declines in digital imaging, movies and MP3 players, according to Best Buy.

    n

The company said its operating income rate in the current quarter will be 175 to 185 basis points lower than in the same period last year -- a “higher than expected cost.”

    n

However, in a trend that’s playing out across the retail industry, Best Buy said its Internet-based sales were massively successful. Online revenue for the holiday period came in at $1.32 billion, with year-over-year comparable sales soaring 23.5%.

Worst "customer service" ever when I attempted to have my iPhone repaired.  Rude, arrogant, and dismissive employees - my goodness, I would love to read the "Best Buy Training Manual on How to Lose Customers."  Long story short, I left the store, cancelled the Geek Squad "Protection" plan for my iPhone, and headed to the Apple Store.  Despite the late hour (8:30PM), the Apple employees treated me with respect, kindness, and professionalism, and fit me into Genius Bar schedule. Ultimately,  I accepted the generous offer of a brand new iPhone at the replacement price of $269 for Apple Care program members even though my original phone was purchased from Best Buy.

Americans are not ready to buy high price electronic things, yet.  Everyone is still waiting for economic recovery.  When will Obamanomic start to work?

    nrubeNGA at 12:11 PM January 16, 2014n

Serves them right.  Best Buy has the crappiest return policy ever. They always ask for ID when you want to return something.  They will ban you from returning anything if you return more than 2-3 items, doesn't matter what value they are.

Also, it doesn’t have a very good system to help people who are trying to look for a watch actually find one, so […]

nFull ReviewnIWC Big Pilot Power ReservenReviewed by Daniel in IWC

nThe IWC Pilot Working Power Reserve is definitely a watch that was meant for someone who usually trains or has to go thought tougher environment conditions. A simple watch but with a sophisticated technology behind it, the IWC Pilot Working Power Reserve is definitely something that you should really look into if you need something different looking on your wrist. Also, the watch has a very cool design that seems to add to the roughness and the overall feel it has. Here we have on display two of these watches; however, although they seem very similar, there are differences between them as one is a replica watch and the other is an original IWC Pilot Working Power Reserve.
