I firmly believe that the Silmarils did to the Feanorians what the One Ring did to Frodo and Gollum. They were not evil but they brought about a obsession within the Feanorians. Once Melkor/Morgoth laid his hands on those jewels, they were tainted and the sickness within others to claim them grew strong enough to cause madness and death.
